PROPER YOGA ATTIRE Nude yoga has its following, but in most yoga studios, you should still come dressed for class. Although yoga has no official dress code, there are a few basic guidelines you should follow in the interests of decency, practicality and your own personal comfort. Want to get in great shape? MISCONCEPTIONS Because many yoga practitioners have lean, fit bodies -- and squeeze them into form-fitting clothing -- it might be tempting to assume they're showing off. But those form-fitting clothes serve two definite purposes in class. First, they stay put where they belong, even if you're upside-down or tilted at an angle. Second, they let the instructor easily see -- and, if necessary, correct -- your posture and alignment.

FUNCTION OVER ALL ELSE You don't have to wear specially designed, expensive yoga clothing in class. Stretchy shorts and a form-fitting T-shirt or tank top are ideal for both men and women, and you don't have to have a perfect body to wear them. Remember, you're in class to work on your body, not to show it off. If you need more coverage to feel comfortable, opt for longer yoga pants. Try to avoid the temptation to wear baggy clothing for modesty. Even if the clothing seems more modest when you're upright, the first inverted position you attempt will leave you indecorously exposed. If you have long hair, don't forget a hair tie or bandana to keep your hair out of your face and eyes. HOT YOGA Hot yoga -- which is usually, but not always Bikram yoga -- is practiced in a room that may be heated to more than 100 F. In this case, less is usually best -- within reason. A sports bra and shorts are ideal for women, and men may go bare-chested if they choose. But do not wear a bikini, other type of swimsuit, underwear or leotard to class.

Bring an extra change of clothes, even if you're going straight home, and a bag to hold your yoga clothes. They'll be soaked with sweat by the time you're done with class. RELAX Many people feel self-conscious during their first few yoga classes, and wearing form-fitting clothing may contribute to the discomfort. In most classes, everybody faces the same direction. Beginners are usually situated at the rear of the room. This way you can watch and learn from everyone else's postures -- and you're almost guaranteed that only the instructor will be looking at you. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS If you're a yoga teacher, you might want to take a slightly different approach to yoga attire. In the Yoga Journal article "Dress for Success," Sara Avant Stover suggests that instructors should choose their clothing to foster the class environment. This may include opting for modest clothing instead of the tight or sexy wear some students might wear to class, in order to help your students feel at ease. Simple, comfortable clothing leaves your students free to focus on your teaching. At the same time, the clothing should leave you free enough to move and demonstrate yoga poses. Sponsored Links
